Janice “Cheryl” Smith passed away peacefully on August 30th, 2019 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of 72. Services will be held privately by family.
Cheryl entered the world on August 10th, 1947 in the small town of Raleigh, Mississippi to Morris and Emogene Smith. As a child, she lived in Mississippi and Louisiana. As an adult, she moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where she began a career in Phlebotomy in the early 80s. In the 90s, she wanted to express her love for animals, so she then decided to establish her own pet grooming business. As she grew older, she then felt a need to share her desire to care for others, so she worked in the home health care industry caring for the elderly.
Cheryl was always a “Country Girl at Heart,” and she expressed this with her southern accent, cooking, and gardening. She was very passionate about gardening, it was by far one of her favorite things in life. She enjoyed caring for dying plants and making them grow and thrive again. She was always intrigued with the process of “change and growth,” which is why she enjoyed gardening so much. It was also a friendly reminder of living on a farm as a small child with her Granny Smith, which were some of her favorite childhood memories.
She is survived by her 3 daughters, Kimberly Freeman, Kristina Mapes, and Cindy Clayton, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
“I will never forget the moment that your heart stopped and mine kept beating. But I guess that was God’s way of bringing you home because he needed you more than me. I pray that God protects you and I imagine you in Heaven laughing with all of the loved ones (even furry ones) that you’ve missed so much.” -Cindy

Cindy; before you were thought of, I knew your Mother. She was care free, loving & full of live! (Notice I didn’t say “life!”) She lived her life CARING for others, sharing her GIFTS & TALENTS! Everytime, we saw one another, we smiled & laughed. I’m so glad that you NEVER left her side because Cheryl NEVER left yours. Holding close to all those memories you shared, will help you, survive this loss! Love you!❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏😥😥😥

Thank you my friend for making life more colorful! It was you that gave me the confidence to take road trips alone with my two babies in tow! You even met us on our first trip to New Orleans to make sure we made it safe! Thank you for being a kind friend, always welcoming with sweet words and reassurance when you could sense I needed it. You were a girls girl, one who encouraged and built other women up, a rare character trait, especially in this age. You will live on through all of us, as you had a hand in making many of us the women we are today. Love you eternally, until we meet again.

One of God’s Earthly Angel’s has been given her wings. I will always remember aunt Cheryl as a little “fire cracker “ that instantly brightened any room she walked into. She was beautiful inside and out. I know she’s watching over her family until we meet again. Cindy, Tony, and Little Tony I love you and as always I am praying for you.
